The speaker, Lee
strobel was a former atheist. He thought that the people created God because
they were afraid of death. He was skeptical. He was so skeptical that it
spilled to his spiritual side. He had one goal in life, and that was to bring
maximum pleasure in his life. But everything let him down. His daughter was
scared of him, he and his wife kept having useless arguments, but then one day,
his wife became friends with their neighbor who happens to be a Christian. And
so, the wife became Christian and he was forced to go to church with her.
Sadly, he still came out as an atheist, but this left him wondering. And so he
began to do his research and this is what he has concluded.
Jesus does exist,
and that he rose from the dead. To help prove his statement, he had the four
E’s that would help him. The first E was execution, the second E was Early ,
the third E was empty, and the last E was eyewitnesses. For the first E
(execution) there were no disputes on the field that he was indeed executed.
They had written records for that, in fact there were five of them. It has
already been established. It is basically indisputable. For the second E which
is the early accounts, there was no large time gap on when it was recorded,
other accounts that state that Cleopatra died, it was recorded after a few
hundred years. They were able to preserve the creed that states: For what I
have see, I will pass it on”. For the third E which is empty, the speaker was
referring to the tomb of Jesus. It was sealed and guarded but yet, on the first
easter morning, it was discovered empty. There are three factors that support
the third E, the first factor is the Jerusalem factor. The site of Jesus’ tomb
was unknown. The second factor was the criteria of embarrassment. If the writer
was embarrassed, that means it was real. Women were the ones that discovered
Jesus’ tomb was empty, and during that period in time, women were not trusted.
The last factor is that even Jesus’ enemy admitted that It was empty. They
simply said “uhm, the disciples stole the body” they were basically making a
cover story. The last and final E would be eyewitnesses, After Jesus’ death, he
appeared to 515 people. Atheist were saying that those people could just be
hallucinating, well, in case they don’t know, hallucination is an event that
happens only in the individuals mind. Meaning, it does not happen in a group,
altogether, all at once, in one certain event.
Thus concluding that their argument is in fact invalid.
My Reaction:
My reaction to
this is that Jesus Christ is indeed real. There are just so much proofs, there
are written records about this, and you can simply prove his existence even
without the help of the Bible.
Lee Strobel, who
was a former atheist was able to prove himself wrong, he was able to provide many
evidences. This is one of the things that I loved about Lee Strobel’s talk. He
was able to provide so much evidences that it made my belief in Christianity
stronger. He was able to answer all my questions about Christianity. He was
able to provide reasonable and realistic answers.
The
resurrection of Christ is indeed convincing, there are enough evidences as Lee
Strobel said, just like the third E, his tomb was empty. As I mentioned above
there were three factors that helped support the theory which was the Jerusalem
factor, criteria of embarrassment and that even Jesus’ opponents admitted it.
